" I think I am gifted as a language learner. My native language is Japanese and I started studying English at the age of 11, just before I entered a junior high school. Since then, I have enjoyed studying foreign languages. I didn'tmajored in English linguistics at university. I also studied basic Spanish as a second foreign language. I often hear it said that the best way to acquire a foreign language is to live in the place where it is spoken, but not everyone can afford to do so. In fact, I have never left my own country, but somehow, I have been successful in learning English.
Here are a few tips on how to learn a foreign language, especially for those of you who do not have opportunities to study it in the country where it is spoken.
1. KEEP A DIARY IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE
I believe that the best way to master a foreign language is to use it every day. By keeping a diary in the language you are studying, you can learn vocabulary and grammatical rules in a meaningful and creative way.
2. PLAY A DRAMA IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE
I belonged to the English drama club when I was a junior high school student. I was very lucky that I met an enthusiastic English teacher who believed in teaching a foreign language through playing dramas. We played an English drama for the school festival every year. When we play a drama, we must learn our words by heart, which is very helpful. We can also learn to express ourselves with appropriate emotions. I think playing a drama is one of the best ways to learn a foreign language.
3. TRY TO USE THE LANGUAGE AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE
If it is possible, make friends with people who are native speakers of your target language. If not, find someone with whom you practice conversation. It is also a good idea to find pen pals in other countries. It is fun to learn a language through interacting with people.
4. CREATE WEB PAGES IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE
This is what I am doing right now.
5. ALWAYS SEEK WAYS TO MAKE YOUR STUDY MORE INTERESTING TO YOU
The following are a few other things which I have tried and found helpful: talking to the teddy bears in the target language when there is nobody else to talk to, reciting poems and sentences while taking a bath, watching movies and dramas, and browsing through web pages containing language humor.
As you can see, the list above is far from exhaustive. It goes without saying that effective ways of learning a foreign language differ from person to person depending on his or her purpose, level of achievement, and so on. What one likes, one will do best. Try different ways until you find the best one. "
